National Depression Screening Day on Oct. 9 is a reminder that mental health and physical health should be equal priorities in our culture. Unfortunately, depression is a silent struggle for many people. Social stigma, toxic masculinity and a reluctance to show vulnerability often prevent men from seeking the help they need. At PACE Recovery, we believe it’s time to change that narrative.
If you feel emotionally numb, detached or “off,” recognizing the signs of major depressive disorder may be the insight you need to get help.
A Mental Health Crisis Among Young Men
Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, impacting people’s ability to work, form relationships and maintain a sense of purpose. Untreated, this condition can escalate into substance abuse, self-harm or suicide – especially among young men.
Studies show that men are less likely to seek help for depression and more likely to die by suicide than women. Part of this is cultural. Many young boys grow up believing that showing emotion is a sign of weakness – that they must “man up” instead of self-advocating. But repressing your feelings won’t make them disappear.
Common Symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder
Though depression affects everyone differently, some of its hallmark symptoms include:
- Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness or hopelessness
- Loss of interest in hobbies or activities you used to enjoy
- Fatigue or lack of energy
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
- Thoughts of death or suicide
These must be present for at least two weeks to meet the criteria for major depressive disorder. But even short-term distress deserves your attention.
Lesser-Known Signs in Young Men
Many young men live with depression for years without realizing it because their symptoms show up in subtle, socially acceptable ways:
- Irritability or anger instead of crying or sadness
- Substance abuse to self-medicate emotional pain
- Risky behaviors like reckless driving or unsafe sex
- Physical complaints such as headaches, digestive issues or chronic pain
- Emotional numbness or a sense of disconnection from others
These symptoms are valid and often indicate profound emotional pain that merits professional support.
